Schenker Opens New Logistics Hub For North Asia Operation

As one of the foremost providers of integrated logistics services in the world, Schenker generates sales of 8.9 billion euros annually with 42,000 employees and around 1,100 offices across the globe. Among Schenker’s offerings are land operations, airfreight and sea freight apart from comprehensive logistics solutions and global supply chain management from a single source.

Currently Schenker has initiated operations at its KLC (Korea Logistics Centre), which lies in the Incheon International Airport’s Free Trade Zone. KLC has multiple roles as a regional freighter hub, a logistics center for north Asia as well as a new distribution hub for Korean market.

Industry experts reveal that Schenker’s customers worldwide are now able to get access to one of Korea’s biggest buying markets. 50 percent of the buying power in Korea is accounted for by the greater Seoul area alone.

KLC commands a total area of 10,000 sq. ms of which nearly 9,000 sq ms comprise warehousing and space handling on two levels. With around 5,000 pallet locations and over 1,500 sq ms of office space, the centre has in place state-of the-art technology apart from special capacities for hazardous materials and temperature-specific goods.

Regional Director, Asia Pacific of Schenker AG explains that the new multi-purpose centre offers advanced logistics to customers in Korea as well as globally. Being among the pioneers in foreign direct investors of the free trade zone, Schenker plays a crucial role in boosting Korea’s international competitive edge with support to the North East Asia logistics hub policy as well as the development of the domestic logistics industry.

In the words of the company spokesman, Schenker has been an active player in Korea with its own subsidiary since 1997. At present apart from air and sea freight operations, Schenker Korea Ltd. is also involved with all the related logistical operations at five sites. Among the sites is Busan, which ranks third among the world’s largest container ports.

Netherlands’s shipping IJS Global Acquires Transfairways

IJS Global Incorporation took over Transfairways BV, a Dutch logistics provider that deals in project forwarding on October 12, 2006. IJS Global Inc is a rapidly growing non-vessel operating common carrier, customs broker and multi-modal freight forwarder. The cost involved in this takeover process was withheld.

A statement from IJS Global BV highlighted recent acquisitions of operations in the Asian countries of China, Hong Kong and the Philippines and Italy in Europe in 2005. The following year IJS Global BV expanded even further with offices in the USA in Chicago, IL and Houston, Texas, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Sri Lanka in Asia and the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany in Europe.

The current deal provides provision for integration of Transfairways into the functional operations of IJS Global BV. Thanks to the acquisition IJS Global BV has now evolved into a comprehensive provider of air, sea and road transport. Among its offerings are courier, rail and mail transportation and logistics services that span a wide range from express carriage and project for warding to less-than-container load sea freight and airfreight solutions.

Founded in 1991, Transfairways has its headquarters at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Since 1994, it has secured EN/ISO 9002 certification for all its operations.  It also gained memberships to International Air Transport Association (IATA), Air Transport Association Netherlands (ATAN) and Fenex (Garantefund).

Officials of Transfairways have disclosed that director of Transfairways will be taking on joint responsibility for the ongoing Transfairways activities, with Martin Verdonk country director of IJS Global BV.

Transfairways has created a niche for itself when it comes to natural disasters in the world. Logistics management is handled for dispatching medical equipment, pharmaceuticals and personnel speedily for humanitarian aid.

In a comment, Chairman and CEO of IJS Global spoke of Transfairways as an agile and experienced service provider. It is expected to strengthen existing operations and complement their business through positioning in segments lacking prior presence.

CEO of IJS Global for the Middle East, Africa and Europe elaborated further that Transfairways acquisition has made it possible to speed up the process of strengthening their Dutch operations, thereby enhancing the overall development of the company.
